Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kai Desinger (Medical Devices) earned his Doctorate of Mechanical Engineering (specializing in biomedical technology and precision engineering) at the Technical University Berlin.
As an engineering scientist with years of experience in research and industry in the specialist fields of biomedical technology and micromechanics, he headed the Department of Minimally Invasive Surgery and New Technologies at Laser-Medizin-Zentrum Berlin GmbH. Based upon one of his inventions for the treatment of breast cancer, he co-founded the medical device company SenoRx in the USA in 1997. The successful company was listed on NASDAQ and acquired by Bard in 2010. In 1999 Dr. Kai Desinger founded Celon AG Medical Instruments outside of Berlin. During its start-up phase, the company planned their exit scenario as an acquisition by a strategic investor. Their plan was successful: in 2004 the company became part of Olympus Medical. Dr. Kai Desinger remained Chairman of the Board of Celon AG, leading the company to become Olympus’s global Competence Center for Electrosurgery. In 2005 then-Chancellor Gerhard Schröder appointed Dr. Kai Desinger a partner in the German federal government’s Partner for Innovation initiative, where he helped plan and implement the High-Tech Gründerfonds. Dr. Kai Desinger is the chairman of the High-Tech Gründerfonds K1 Investment Committee, an advisory member of the Knowledge and Technology Transfer Council – an initiative of the federal state of Brandenburg led by its minister president, Matthias Platzeck – and since 2005 has lectured on Technical Entrepreneurship at the Technical University TU Berlin.
